XPS is a complex technique requiring a certain degree of knowledge with respect to both theory and instrumentation. Training is intended ONLY for users who will do XPS regularly; otherwise, please submit samples for full service.
Training will consist of three parts: the first part is x-ray safety training hosted by the ESSR department, the second is reading literature and passing an online Quiz, and the third is in-person training on the supra+ XPS instrument.
Basic training scheduling
Follow the instructions to complete
1. If you have not already done so – Register to become a NanoCenter and SAC user.
2. Schedule the university x-ray safety training and obtain a certificate
You must have completed the university’s two-part radiation safety- use of x-ray machines before we are allowed to train you. Part 1 is online and can be accessed at this link for UMCP users. Part 2 is in-person and can be scheduled online at this link. External users please contact Steven Hand, the Radiation Safety officer for instructions on completing both parts of this training. After the x-ray safety training you will receive a certificate, you will need to upload the certificate for part 2 as part of filling out the form below to request training.
3. Answer and pass the following Quiz
Please read this excellent introduction to XPS from the Journal of Applied Physics, authored by Grzegorz Greczynski and check out the information about our Kratos Supra XPS instruments on our website before answering this Quiz.
We will have a preliminary meeting after completion of this quiz and before scheduling instrument training to verify you have grasped the basic concepts of XPS and also to discuss your samples and training.
4. Please fill out this form to request instrument training, we will respond ASAP to schedule a preliminary meeting with you.
